The inaugural ceremony of the Villa Viardot renovation project took place on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 with a stirring emotional note. The restored Villa Viardot is scheduled to open on July 18, 2021, for the bicentenary of Pauline Viardot. This restoration is the first step of a larger project where tangible and intangible heritage will echo in harmony: the future Centre Européen de Musique.
After being one of the most reputable artistic salon of the 19th century, the Villa was in a state of advanced disrepair when Jorge Chaminé, a renowned baritone, discovered it in 2000. Moved by this icon place, he decided to call-in private and public partners to save and preserve this heritage site.
The future Centre Européen de Musique will be located at the bottom of the “Colline des impressionnistes” in Bougival.
The Villa Viardot is now emerging from oblivion and disregard. The funds collected make it possible to begin work on its restoration and thus ensure the stability of its frame. The Fondation du Patrimoine (French “Heritage Fondation”) will benefit from the funds raised through the Loto du Patrimoine, a total of €500,000 dedicated to the restoration work of the Villa Viardot. The Total Foundation contributed €100,000 to this project. The total budget for the full renocation has been estimated to €3 million. The DRAC and the Region Ile-de-France will add their financial support. The architectural firm Gabor Mester de Paradj is now in charge of the renovation and the Villa Viardot will be a key element part of the CEM outreach.
Speech of Jorge Chaminé, President of the Centre Européen de Musique at the launch of the restoration work on Viardot Villa in Bougival.
The CEM will be dedicated to higher education, art creation, music and performance, transmission and interdisciplinary exchanges in the field of music, bringing together the Villa Viardot and the house where Georges Bizet composed Carmen his famous opera. In addition to these two heritage sites, the CEM new buildings are being designed in full alignment with eco-responsible standards: a music academy, an auditorium, an agora of musical cultures and traditions, a therapeutic and sports area, a research laboratory « Music and Brain » and an intergenerational residence for musicians. As stated by Hermann Parzinger, Executive President of Europa Nostra : “With the CEM and Jorge Chaminé, Memory has a Future”.
