The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was officially launched at a UN Summit in New York in September 2015 and aims at ending poverty in all its forms. The UN 2030 Agenda envisages “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination”.
Activities, actions and values of the Centre Européen de Musique align with 13 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 7 being directly linked to its programs.
As a reminder, the SDG 3 aims to "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". The CEM missions and architecture has put health and well-being through music at the heart of its DNA. The CEM architectural project includes a Therapeutic and athletic centre connected to the CEM research laboratory and an innovative inter-generation residence, a unique concept celebrating “well-being for all at all ages”.
As a reminder, SDG4 aims to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all". The Pauline Viardot Academy of Music has designed its curriculum based on innovative higher education standards, with a clear focus on providing social and professional integration support to its students. At the European Commission's request, "Erasmus +" will be extended to professional music, and the CEM will pioneer and host this new programme.
For the record, the SDG5 aims to "achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. It aims to end all forms of discrimination. The targets defined concern, in particular, women's access to management and decision-making positions". Since inception, the CEM has clearly integrated gender equality as part of its organization, starting with its Board of Directors, the Scientific Council, including its co-chairmanship. Also, a specific focus is planned around Carmen, the main character in Georges Bizet's opera and today the figurehead for gender equality around the world. Moreover, an entire programme will be dedicated to the work and life of composer and singer Pauline García-Viardot.
As a reminder, the SDG9 aims to "build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation". The SDG9 calls for financial, technological and technical support for industries and by encouraging innovation and scientific research. In its current inception, the CEM is composed of 6 programmatic elements distributed across a series of new buildings designed in compliance with today's eco-responsible standards : The Pauline Viardot Academy of Music, the Georges Bizet Auditorium, the Yehudi Menuhin Agora of Musical Cultures and Traditions, the CEM scientific research institute, the Therapeutic and Sports Space and the Intergenerational Residence.
The SDG11 aims to "make cities human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, so that they can provide access to basic services, energy, housing, transport, green public spaces and other amenities for all, while improving the use of resources and reducing their environmental impacts". The CEM architectural complex has been conceived as a cultural eco-district, a living space and community area celebrating transmission, research and creation. It is also a place where music is connecting people, offering a unique social environment.
SDG16 aims to "promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. It addresses three closely related themes: rule of law, quality of institutions, and peace. For France, the major issues at stake relate to access to justice, insecurity and crime, as well as confidence in institutions". Baritone Jorge Chaminé, founder and president of the Centre Européen de Musique, has been appointed by the United Nations as the ambassador for this DSG. Jorge Chaminé has also been awarded the UNESCO Human Rights Medal in 1993, he serves as ambassador for NGO Music in Middle East and is also a permanent member of the board of Music for Peace, an organization which recognized him as a Musician for Peace in 2011.
SDG17 aims to " strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. It aims to encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships, building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships, to enhance the global partnership for sustainable development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources, to support the achievement of the sustainable development goals in all countries.” The Centre Européen de Musique acts as an integrated program and a hub for research, science, art and music resources. Its financing will be provided through public and private partnerships. Under the impulse of France's President Emmanuel Macron, a dedicated committee has already been created in May 2019 including five of the French governmental departments (“Ministères”) to coordinate the effort.
