At the end of November 2021, the Friends of Bizet association, of which Jorge Chaminé is the founding vice-president, acquired the last Erard grand piano that belonged to the composer and singer Pauline Viardot.
This acquisition is a magnificent tribute to the bicentenary of the birth of this great lady of 19th century music. This magnificent piano was sold to the Friends of Bizet association at the Daguerre sale on Tuesday 30 November at the Hôtel Drouot, Paris. It is a grand piano model n°1 in rosewood and rosewood veneer with a metal frame. It stands on three fluted baluster feet ending with brass castors. Made in December 1898, its frame and chassis are numbered 78427. In January 1899, it was given by Erard to Pauline Viardot who was living in Paris at the time. She kept it until 1903. The following year, the piano was bought by Madame Drake del Castillo in Paris, then installed in the château de Véretz in Indre-et-Loire. On the Maison Drouot website we learn that: "Pauline Viardot owned several Erard pianos, under the influence of Liszt, a great propagandist of the brand".
A fine gesture in favour of a musical and historical heritage, "at a time when the restoration of the Villa Viardot in Bougival is being finalised, this is also wonderful news for the European Music Centre", enthuses Jorge Chaminé, president and founder. A restoration of the musical instrument should be carried out soon, in particular to restore the small lacks in the veneer and insolate. The piano will then move to the Villa Viardot in Bougival, which will be the epicentre of the European Music Centre, an eco-responsible cultural district that fulfils 13 of the 17 sustainable development goals established by the member states of the United Nations and which are gathered in the Agenda 2030.
