On the occasion of the bicentennial of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, the members of the Network of Houses and Museums of European Musicians (HMEM) are issuing a solemn call to all European citizens: "Use your vote for Peace! Use your vote for Solidarity! Use your vote for Europe!".
This call, adopted by all members of the Pan-European Network of HMEM, underscores the importance of participating in the European elections and supporting the fundamental values of peace, solidarity, and unity that lie at the heart of the European project. On May 8, 2024, the HMEM members gathered in Wuppertal, Germany, for their annual meeting. This gathering also marked the bicentennial of the premiere of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, a masterful work inspired by Schiller's poem, "Ode to Joy". This special concert, held on May 7, 2024, was a significant moment of celebration and reflection, highlighting the unifying power of music.
The HMEM network took the opportunity of this meeting in Germany to issue a vibrant call to all Europeans. In these troubled times, where war and violence threaten peace, and where divisions and hostilities undermine cohesion and solidarity, the members encourage the use of music as a unique artistic language to promote unity in diversity in Europe and to foster a more respectful and inclusive society.
Launched in April 2022 in Bougival (Yvelines, France), the Pan-European Network of Houses and Museums of European Musicians, which brings together 61 organizations in 24 countries, was initiated by the Centre Européen de Musique. An initiative that was immediately supported by Europa Nostra, which became a principal partner from its inception. This network quickly established itself as a key player in promoting European musical heritage. By bringing together iconic musicians' institutions and houses from all over Europe, the network works to preserve and enhance musical heritage while encouraging cultural exchanges and cross-border cooperation.
"Inspired and proud of the rich European musical traditions that have shaped our shared culture and multiple identities," the network members urge the citizens of the European Union to see the upcoming European elections, scheduled for June 6-9, 2024, as an opportunity to defend and strengthen Europe's common values and ideals.
List of Network Partners
The Pan-European Network of HMEM brings together a multitude of prestigious institutions across Europe, ranging from the Beethoven House in Germany to the Amália Rodrigues Foundation in Portugal, and the Franz Liszt Museum in Hungary, among many others. This diversity attests to the richness of European musical heritage.
The Pan-European Network is also proud of its partnerships with prestigious projects such as the European Heritage Hub, an EU-funded pilot project led by Europa Nostra. The Centre Européen de Musique is the only organization representing the intangible heritage of music in this project. These collaborations strengthen the network's efforts to promote music as a vector for social cohesion and intercultural dialogue.
At this crucial moment for Europe, the Pan-European Network reaffirms its commitment to promoting European values through music. By encouraging participation in the European elections, the network hopes to strengthen unity and solidarity in Europe, inspired by Beethoven's universal and timeless chords.
