Alfred Brendel, a friend, a master, a free spirit.
With immense sorrow, the European Music Centre (CEM) pays tribute to Alfred Brendel, who passed away on 17 June 2025.
A towering figure in the music of the 20th and 21st centuries – pianist, thinker, writer, and teacher – Alfred Brendel embodied rare artistic integrity, profound wit, and unwavering dedication to the inner truth of music.
From the very beginning of the CEM’s story, he served as a committed and inspiring member of our Honorary Committee, offering his precious support, thoughtful guidance, and loyal friendship. A close friend of Jorge Chaminé, President and Founder of the CEM, he accompanied every major stage of this pan-European adventure.
His passing is a profound loss for Music and for all musicians. Yet his legacy – through his unforgettable interpretations, his brilliant writings, and his free spirit – will continue to inspire generations.
Thank you, dear Alfred.
"The silence after your music will never be an absence. It will be a resonance." Jorge Chaminé
