To celebrate World Opera Day on 24 and 25 October, the second edition of Cascais Opera organized by CIVOC in colaboration with the town of Cascais will be making a stopover in France, with major events in Paris and Bougival. Organised by the town of Cascais, this international competition highlights emerging talent and rising opera stars, while paying tribute to Europe's cultural heritage, in particular through its partnership with the Centre Européen de Musique (CEM).

The official launch will take place on 24 October at the Portuguese Embassy in Paris. The evening, which will be attended by leading figures from the world of opera and culture, will feature contests of the first edition of Cascais Opera in an exceptional concert. Up-and-coming talents such as Anna Erokhina, Haesu Kim and Sílvia Sequeira will perform pieces from the classical repertoire, confirming the ambition of this international competition.
The following day, the celebrations will continue in Bougival, in the unique setting of the Villa Viardot, an endangered historic monument that has been restored thanks to the efforts of the Centre Européen de Musique and the support of numerous sponsors and patrons. This venue steeped in history will host an exceptional performance by the artists of Cascais Opera, in tribute to Pauline Viardot, a great figure of European music, whose invaluable influence on 19th-century opera is the subject of a documentary co-produced by the CEM and Bel Air Média, to be broadcast on Arte on 24 November at 7pm.
The Villa Viardot in Bougival will host an exceptional performance by the artists of Cascais Opera, in tribute to Pauline Viardot, a great figure of European music, whose CEM has co-produced with Bel Air Média a documentary dedicated in particular to her inestimable influence on opera in the 19th century, to be broadcast on Arte on 24 November at 7pm.
The Centre Européen de Musique, under the direction of Jorge Chaminé, plays a decisive role in preserving Europe's musical heritage, with the Villa Viardot as one of its main landmarks. One of the cradles of 19th-century artistic life and European cosmopolitanism, the Villa Viardot has been reborn as a centre for artistic creation and dissemination. Through its programming, the CEM brings this heritage back to life, while at the same time creating a modern dynamic that links generations, as in the case of the Cascais Opera event.
The collaboration between Cascais Opera and the European Music Centre illustrates a shared ambition: to promote cultural heritage and support young talent in the field of opera. This partnership creates cultural bridges between Portugal and France, strengthening opera's position as a universal and unifying art form in Europe. The Portuguese branch of the European Music Centre opened its doors at the National Palace in Mafra on 7 July, in the presence of Cascais Opera.
The Cascais Opera competition, directed by the famous baritone Sergei Leiferkus, will be held in Portugal in April 2025, offering young singers the chance to perform at prestigious festivals and opera houses across Europe. As a partner institution, the CEM is reinforcing its commitment to supporting music and opera, two essential pillars of European culture.
