[Press Release] Paris, Brussels, Lisbon, 28 May 2024 - On the occasion of the participation of Jorge Chaminé, President of the Centre Européen de Musique (CEM), in a round table discussion including representatives of the MUS-E® programme of the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation (IYMF). The CEM and the IYMF have strengthened their partnership and announced that the CEM will be responsible for developing the MUS-E® programme in France.
At this event, which brings together leaders and coordinators committed to promoting the values of multiculturalism and interculturality through the arts, it was agreed that the CEM would take charge of setting up and managing the MUS-E® programme in France. The aim of this initiative is to introduce art into schools, to encourage self-esteem and mutual respect, and to prevent violence and exclusion, particularly in 'at-risk' establishments. In this way, bridges are created between the worlds of the arts and education. Conceived in 1993, this intercultural programme has already been implemented in 10 European countries.
As part of this collaboration, the CEM is committed to developing and extending the MUS-E® programme in France, starting with pilot projects in several classes, with the aim of extending the initiative to other schools at a later date. This project will be carried out in partnership with national and local institutions, to maximise the positive impact of art on democratic values and human equality.
The partnership between the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and the CEM is part of a continuing story. It is the story of a meeting between Jorge Chaminé, now a member of the Board of Directors of the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. The man who is now at the head of the CEM has always been deeply influenced by Yehudi Menuhin, one of his spiritual masters and artistic accomplices. Under Menuhin's direction, Chaminé performed as a baritone, strengthening the ties between them.
A French association recognised as being of public utility, the CEM was created in 2013 and becomes in 2024 the first ENGO (European non-governmental organisation) to develop a holistic and transdisciplinary vision of the powers and benefits of music. It has an endowment fund, a scientific committee and a dedicated foundation, the EU-topia Foundation. Based on four pillars (creation, training, transmission and innovation), the CEM develops initiatives that have a major impact on society. It explores and shares the benefits of music through innovative projects and activities.
The CEM France is at the origin of concepts such as eco-responsible cultural eco-districts and the MMME network (Musicians' Houses and Museums in Europe). It develops local, national, European and international initiatives in partnership with numerous public and private institutions.
The CEM's projects come in a variety of formats, permanent and temporary, physical and digital. The CEM contributes to the design and implementation of transdisciplinary programmes and projects in the scientific, artistic and cultural fields, drawing on its network and skills.
The International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation (IYMF) is an international association created by Yehudi Menuhin in Brussels in 1991 to give a voice to the voiceless through art. Its mission is to promote intercultural dialogue, both nationally and internationally, using artistic practice as a tool for social inclusion.
The IYMF facilitates international exchanges and co-creation between artists from different cultures, and promotes the integration of artistic practice into the education of children from all backgrounds.
This vision is embodied in a number of projects for social inclusion through art, including a network of artistic practice in schools present in 12 countries (MUS-E® Programme) around the world and projects in reception centres for migrants (INSIDE Project).
