On February 24, the Centre Européen de Musique (CEM) established a chain of solidarity* between Ukrainian, Russian and European musicians. It also concerns all those, regardless of their continent, who would like to join it to say no to the madness of a dictator. Today this charter has been signed by dozens of institutions such as the Pablo Casals Foundation in Tarragona (Spain) or the Sibelius Museum in Turku (Finland), and many European musicians, including Ukrainian, Belarussian and Russian, have signed it.
"We are proud of the courage expressed by some Russian musicians and we are waiting for some of the most 'sounding' names to express, without ambiguity, their position", explains Jorge Chaminé, president-founder of the CEM at the source of this initiative.
"Fraternity will be an antidote to nationalistic rhetoric"
The CEM and its team are mobilizing their networks. Targeted actions of solidarity and support are currently being prepared: "We are working on several points and in particular on a welcome for Ukrainian musicians forced to leave their country. This action and those in preparation are in line with the DNA of the CEM which is to build, through Music and Culture, the brotherhood that will be an antidote to the nationalist discourse that is again raging in our continent," says Jorge Chaminé.
In solidarity with Ukraine, attacked in its heart, several artists have decided to take a stand against the aggression led by Putin's Russia. This is the case of Laurent Hilaire. The former French star dancer, who has been the head of the ballet company of the Stanislavski Musical Academic Theatre in Moscow for 5 years, announced his resignation this weekend. Also in Moscow, Elena Kovalskaya, director of the Vsevolod Meyerhold State Theater and Cultural Center, resigned in protest against the Russian invasion.
