On February 24th, the Centre Européen de Musique and myself, we had to react to the invasion of Ukraine by the dictator's Russian regime. Our field of action was very limited, and at the beginning we felt terribly frustrated because all we could consider as action became almost grotesque in front of such horror. Without any other means than that of speech and generosity, we worked day and night and, very quickly, this chain of solidarity was done before our eyes.
A dozen European institutions from Tarragona to Turku, more than sixty musicians and innumerable individuals offering welcoming refugees, answered at our call! I hold here to thank you all, from the bottom of the heart, for your generous and human impetus. This upsets us and makes us believe that, alas, in the most tragic moments, the human being is capable of the best being anchored in humanity and fraternity that are so often lacking in our societies.
We wanted to establish, also, a dialogue between Ukrainian musicians, Belarus and Russians - those of the diaspora but also those who remained in their countries - and I would like to thank them especially because they had the courage to condemn this inhuman and absurd action at their risk and peril. At the same time, the response of musicians from Lisbon to Warsaw, from Stockholm to Athens made us realize that the European soil belonging is felt and shared by all of us. This is Europe! That of sharing values, that of music as a link between peoples!
In front of this poignant observation, a dozen days after the invasion of Ukraine, of the exponential increase of Ukrainian exiles, we are ready to welcome them through the individuals who have written to us and the institutions that support us.
Financially devoid, we are proud to have been able to have, in such a short time and thanks to your generosity, set up a real solidarity chain for Ukraine but also for our Belarusian and Russian friends who endure another form of fear that often condemns them to silence. Their valiant gesture touches us particularly.
Sometimes it's not because we do not have the financial means to be generous that we cannot act. The true action often lies in what in Latin is called the Caritas or in Hebrew the Hessed or the Arabic Sadaka, which translates, like Cicero affirms, "the love of the human race". We believe it and it appears that we have proof. Thank you!
