Each week, discover one of the members of the Network of Houses and Museums of European Musicians. These places link the past, present and future, they honor a tangible and intangible heritage and fulfill an essential cultural purpose in Europe. In this first part, we present the Henri Dutilleux Geneviève Joy House.
Henri Dutilleux is considered today as one of the greatest composers of contemporary music of the 20th century. He was also one of the most interpreted during his lifetime and passed on a major work. Henri Dutilleux is also considered as one of the heirs of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. During his lifetime, the immense musician created the association Maison Henri Dutilleux Geneviève Joy (his wife, pianist and performer) with the ambition "to accompany young artists, musical creation and promote the dissemination of music of our time."

As the association Maison Henri Dutilleux Geneviève Joy explains on its website: "since 2013, a program of concerts and artists' residencies welcomes on the one hand great performers and on the other hand young pianists or composers winners of piano competitions in Orleans or the composition competition of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps. In the footsteps of the composer and his wife Geneviève Joy, a great pianist who taught her instrument and chamber music, many artists have come to enchant the gardens of Candes-Saint-Martin''.

Designed to accommodate artists in residence, the Maison Dutilleux, whose garden overlooks the banks of the Loire, was recently restored in keeping with its history and the standards of Bâtiments de France. As for the Villa Viardot in Bougival, which will be the beating heart of the Centre Européen de Musique, a mobilization has taken place for the safeguarding and restoration of the place. The Fondation de France, local authorities and the state have all contributed. This place of inspiration for Henri Dutilleux, holder of the Ernst von Siemens prize among others, now aims to be a place for young creators and performers according to the composer's wishes: a place to live, work and reflect. The 19th century residence is also intended to welcome a large public. The opening of the residences took place in December 2021 with the reception of the first resident, Dimitri Batalov, winner of the Orléans International Piano Competition. The "Maison des Illustres" label was recently obtained by this high place of musical heritage.

The Dutilleux Joy House holds many possessions of the great composer and his wife, including this piano.
Today, the Maison Dutilleux Joy includes a studio, a piano, a library and a sound library, a listening room. Many of the composer's works on vinyl and CD, as well as books dedicated to him, are collected here. A courtyard, a rose garden and a garden between the building and the Loire River host outdoor events. The first Dutilleux festival took place in October 2021 in the garden of the house and in Chinon (visuals below). These facilities will be available to guests of the House, which will also open its doors to the public for visits and occasional events.
Music lovers, art and heritage enthusiasts, musicians, Henri Dutilleux's relatives... The association that keeps this house alive is today supported by volunteers attached to the composer's values: high standards, openness, humility, independence of spirit...
